The British Retail Consortium's Retail Crime Survey 2010 shows an 11 per cent reduction in the overall number of offences (per 100 outlets) compared with the previous year. Shoplifting incidents were down 10.6 per cent though the total value of goods stolen was still up on the previous year.
But in 2009/10, retailers spent £210 million on protecting their staff, stock and premises, 10 per cent more than the previous year. The full article containing further information, statistics and details of the BRC's recommendations can be viewed by clicking here.

Businesses need to raise their game on the security of their web sites, as regulators and industry bodies begin to take a tougher line on compliance, a leading analyst has warned.
Graham Titterington, principal analyst at Ovum, said that businesses face a greater likelihood of enforcement action this year, if they lose data, or breach industry security standards.
"Proving your security is a non-trivial exercise and involves putting in a whole raft of measures. It's got the attention of the board and caused them to open their wallets," he said in an interview with Computer Weekly.

SHAC (Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty) held a demonstration on Thursday 13th January with a total of ten demonstrators in attendance. The group appeared intent on disrupting the offices that they attended and on each occasion attempted to gain access to the offices before being asked to leave by security.
Further demonstrations are planned for Friday 28th January, with what SHAC are labelling a 'Global action day', aimed at disrupting the premises of Huntingdon Life Sciences' customers. AstraZeneca, Bayer, Merck, Sanofi and Shering Plough are known to be targets suggested to potential demonstrators by SHAC.

The threat of terrorism in the UK is at its most dangerous level for three years, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson has warned. He said terrorism remained a persistent and enduring tactic that was "global, diverse and sometimes unpredictable".
There had been a "dangerous resurgence" in the threat from Republican groups, he told security experts in London. And people must also be alert to right-wing extremism as well as the broader threat from al-Qaeda, he added.
Speaking at the Royal United Services Institute, Sir Paul said: “This is undoubtedly as dangerous a time as we have seen for the UK, and UK interests abroad, since the attempted attacks on the Tiger-Tiger nightclub in London and Glasgow airport in 2007. There can be no complacency."
