A ten-year strategy to combat smoking is being launched by Edwin Poots tomorrow in Northern Ireland. The strategy will aim to prevent people from starting to smoke, reducing the number of smokers, and protecting people from passive smoking. Mr Poots said the strategy will focus on young people and those most at risk from smoking. He added that it would also target pregnant women, and those living in deprived areas.
A ban on cigarette vending machines in Northern Ireland will come into effect on 1st March to help prevent underage purchases of cigarettes. Under the campaign over the next year there will be a reduction in the number of large hoardings advertising cigarettes in supermarkets, with the same policy coming into effect in smaller shops in 2015.
The strategy also plans to launch a consultation to address the issue of people smoking in cars while they are travelling with children.
Perpetuity is currently undertaking evaluations of two projects in Leicester; one which aims to reduce the uptake of smoking by young people; and another which aims to reduce the number of children exposed to second hand smoke by encouraging people to smoke outside their homes and cars.
